From Doom to Engagement: Facing These Perilous Times

With Glenn Inglis

October 25 - 27, 2024

Men’s Spiritual Retreat

Charles Dickens wrote of his age that “it was the best of times and the worst of times.”

We have the science and technology to build better societies and tackle the climate crisis. But we are confronting a period of war, dislocation, and the rise of militant groups keen on fomenting societal chaos. And the natural world reels under the burden of climate change.

As Christians, we are to be people of hope, of love, bearing fruits in sacrifice for others, and struggling for peace. Yet the Church is also in decline, losing
membership, influence, and relevance.

Brian D. McLaren in his most recent book speaks of this period as one of ‘Doom’ and yet a period we must face, understand, and confront with resilience and
engagement. Briefly, we will acknowledge and ponder the sources and feelings of ‘doom’ we are experiencing then move on to share the sources of ‘wisdom and
courage’ (McLaren’s subtitle) that the Spirit offers us to live faithful lives that also encourage others.

We meet as a group to sing, learn, and discuss; time is given for individual prayer and small group sharing; Saturday afternoon allows personal time to enjoy a walk, rest, and ponder. On Sunday we have some group reflection, and planning, and then close with Communion. (This is an ecumenical service with all invited to share.)

We will not change the world in a weekend, but we will gain insights, encouragement, and strength to deepen our faith, hope, and love in a world that
needs healing, reconciliation, and peace.
