Two Yoga Classes now at the Bethlehem Centre!

Chair Yoga

Chair yoga is a gentle form of yoga that is practiced sitting on a chair, or standing using a chair for support. It is in the process of being recognized formally as a type of yoga distinct from other types, such as Iyengar Yoga or Ashtanga yoga. Chair yoga is a great practice for everyone, as it deepens flexibility and strengthens personal body awareness.

In the broadest sense Hatha (opposing energy) yoga (connection) can be any mental, physical or spiritual practice designed to facilitate physical, mental and spiritual awareness and connection. This class follows the general approach and structure of many beginner to intermediate yoga styles: 1) a series of physical movements (asanas or poses); 2) a focus on breathing; and, 3) meditation (in varying proportion). The poses used in this class are adapted (and named) from many simple (beginner to intermediate) yoga asanas but are informed by stretching practices and safety guidelines used in non-yoga classes, where these same or similar poses are called ‘mindful stretches,’ stretches that are part of the standard repertoire in all non-yoga training which I have been using for 20 years. Inversions and other expert level yoga poses are not used in this class. In many cases the poses are taught at a beginner’s level, with intermediate options offered for those with more experience. No previous yoga experience is required.

Dr. Russell McNeil has been a BCRPA group fitness leader and personal trainer in Nanaimo for over 15 years. Russell currently offers courses on Stoic influenced Meditation through VIU. This philosophy is at the core of Russell’s unique approach toward yoga, where East meets West with a blend of physical techniques nurtured in the Eastern world but mediated in Russell’s approach by a philosophy developed in the West.
